Convex Mirror Placement Guide: Correct Angles & Heights
A convex mirror is only effective if it is positioned correctly. The wrong height, the wrong angle, or the wrong size will leave blind spots uncovered and create a false sense of security.
Mirror Size Selection

Mounting Height
Road Junctions & Car Park Entrances
- Recommended height: 2.0m–3.0m above the ground
- Position so that a driver at the stop line can see all approaching traffic in the mirror
- Height should allow sight of approaching pedestrians as well as vehicles
Warehouse & Industrial Aisles
- Recommended height: 1.8m–2.5m above the floor
- Position at aisle intersections so forklift operators can see oncoming traffic
- Height must allow sight of low-profile pallet trucks as well as forklifts
Angle Adjustment
Horizontal Angle (Pan)
Aim to see the full approach road from a position 2–3 metres behind the junction. Test by standing at the driver's eye position (approximately 1.2m) and adjusting until the approach is fully visible.
Vertical Angle (Tilt)
For vehicle detection: tilt slightly downward to ensure low vehicles are visible. Avoid tilting so far down that the sky is reflected — this reduces contrast and effectiveness.

- Identify the observer position
- Identify the blind spot
- Select the mirror size using the table above
- Choose the mounting position with clear line of sight
- Mount at correct height
- Adjust the angle until the blind spot is fully visible
- Test at different times of day for glare issues
Outdoor Mirror Considerations
- Use weatherproof stainless steel or acrylic mirrors for outdoor installation
- Avoid standard glass mirrors outdoors — they shatter and corrode
