Surface Mount Bollards UK — Bolt-Down, No-Dig Bollard Solutions

Surface mount bollards fix directly to existing concrete or tarmac using anchor bolts — no excavation required. This makes them the ideal solution for retrofitting bollard protection to car parks, loading bays and building facades where digging is impractical or disruptive.

Why Choose Surface Mount Bollards?

  • No excavation — no need to break up concrete or tarmac
  • Faster installation — typically installed in minutes rather than hours
  • Lower cost — no groundworks or concrete reinstatement
  • Removable — can be unbolted and relocated
  • Suitable for any solid surface — concrete, tarmac, paving
  • Available in security-rated versions — PAS 68 surface mount options available

Types Available

Flange Base Bollards

Steel bollard with a flat base plate drilled for anchor bolts. Most common surface mount design. Available in 76mm, 102mm and 114mm diameters. Galvanised or powder-coated.

Cast Iron Surface Mount Bollards

Heritage design for town centres and conservation areas. Heavy cast iron flange base — substantial weight aids stability even before anchoring. Available in traditional profiles.

Security-Rated Surface Mount Bollards

Engineered for high-load applications where in-ground foundation isn't available. Larger base plate, more anchor bolts, structural-grade anchors. Some models carry PAS 68 test data.

Anchor Bolt Specification

For reliable installation on concrete:

  • Minimum M12 stainless steel chemical anchors
  • Minimum 100mm embedment depth in concrete
  • 4 anchor bolts minimum per bollard
  • Concrete must be a minimum 25N/mm² (standard C25/C30)

On tarmac, surface mount bollards are less suitable as tarmac doesn't provide the same anchor-pull strength as concrete. For tarmac surfaces, consider in-ground bollards with a compact foundation.

FAQ

How strong are surface mount bollards?

A correctly installed surface mount bollard on good quality concrete will resist the same lateral loads as an equivalent in-ground bollard. The weakness is in the substrate — poor quality concrete or tarmac reduces holding strength significantly. Security-rated surface mount bollards use larger base plates and more anchor points to compensate.

Can surface mount bollards be used for anti-ram protection?

Some security-rated surface mount bollards carry PAS 68 certification for vehicle impact resistance. These use structural anchor systems and larger base plates specifically engineered for impact loads. Standard flange-base bollards are not suitable for anti-ram applications.

What fixings do surface mount bollards use?

Typically M12–M16 stainless steel expansion anchors or chemical (resin) anchors at minimum 100mm depth. Chemical anchors are preferred for the strongest pull-out resistance. Stainless steel fixings prevent corrosion staining on the surrounding surface.
