How to Install Bollards: The Complete UK Guide

Bollards are one of the most versatile safety and security products available, but correct installation is critical to their performance. A poorly installed bollard may fail under impact, create a trip hazard, or simply fall over โ€” defeating the purpose entirely. Types of Bollard Installation

There are three main installation methods for bollards in the UK:

1. Surface-Mounted Bollards (Base Plate)

Surface-mounted bollards use a steel base plate that is bolted directly onto an existing tarmac, concrete, or paved surface using anchor bolts. This is the quickest and least disruptive installation method and is suitable for most pedestrian access control and light traffic management applications.

Steps:

Tools required: Core drill with appropriate bit, concrete mixer or ready-mix concrete, spirit level
Typical installation time: 1โ€“2 hours per bollard (including concrete cure time)

Steps:

  1. Core-drill to the depth specified by the bollard manufacturer (typically 400โ€“600mm)
  2. Remove debris and ensure the hole is clean and dry
  3. Place the bollard or sleeve in the hole and check it is plumb
  4. Pack around the bollard with dry post-mix or wet concrete to the manufacturer's specification
  5. Allow concrete to cure fully before the bollard is subject to load (typically 24โ€“48 hours)

3. Removable & Retractable Bollards

Removable bollards are installed into a pre-set ground socket. The bollard can be locked in place and removed when access is required. The socket is installed using the core-drill method above.

Important Considerations Before Installing

  • Underground services: Always use a cable avoidance tool (CAT) to check for buried gas, water, electricity, and telecoms cables before drilling or excavating. Contact relevant utility providers or use a mapping service.
  • Highways: Any work on or adjacent to the public highway requires coordination with the local highway authority and may require a Section 50 licence.
  • Planning permission: Bollard installation on listed buildings or within conservation areas may require listed building consent or planning permission.
  • Disability access: Ensure bollard spacing complies with Equality Act 2010 requirements โ€” a minimum clear gap of 1500mm is recommended for wheelchair users.
