Safety mirrors — also called convex mirrors or traffic mirrors — eliminate blind spots in warehouses, car parks, junctions, and driveways. This guide covers types, sizing, placement, and UK standards.
Types of Safety Mirror
| Type | Material | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Acrylic Convex | Lightweight acrylic | Indoor warehouses, corridors |
| Polycarbonate | Shatterproof | Outdoor, vandal-prone areas |
| Stainless Steel | Grade 304/316 steel | Food production, hygiene areas |
| Anti-Frost | Heated or treated surface | Outdoor in cold climates |
Choosing the Right Size
Mirror size depends on viewing distance — how far away the observer will be:
- 300mm diameter — up to 3m viewing distance. Corridors, tight corners.
- 450mm diameter — up to 6m. Warehouse aisles, small junctions.
- 600mm diameter — up to 11m. Car park exits, loading bays. Most popular size.
- 800mm diameter — up to 15m. Road junctions, large car parks.
- 1000mm+ diameter — 20m+. Major road junctions, industrial sites.
Indoor vs Outdoor Mirrors
Indoor: Acrylic is fine — lightweight, easy to mount, good image clarity. Use in warehouses, factories, corridors, and retail environments.
Outdoor: Must be weather-resistant. Polycarbonate is shatterproof and handles UV exposure. Stainless steel is the premium choice for exposed locations. Consider anti-frost models for areas prone to condensation.
Mounting and Placement
Height: Centre of mirror at 1.8–2.2m above ground for pedestrian/vehicle viewing.
Angle: Adjust the ball-joint bracket so the observer can see the blind spot from their normal position. This may need fine-tuning after installation.
Mounting options: Wall bracket (most common), post-mount (for junctions), ceiling-mount (warehouses, retail).
Warehouse Applications
In warehouse environments, safety mirrors are critical at:
- Aisle intersections where forklifts cross
- Blind corners around racking
- Loading bay entrances/exits
- Pedestrian walkway intersections with vehicle routes
- Cold store and freezer doorways
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends convex mirrors as part of a workplace transport risk assessment under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.
Road and Driveway Mirrors
For blind driveways or private road junctions, a 600mm outdoor convex mirror is typically sufficient. Mount on a post or wall opposite the junction so drivers can see approaching traffic.
Note: Mirrors on the public highway require local authority permission. On private land (driveways, car parks), no permission is needed.
