School Safety Equipment: Bollards, Barriers & Drop-Off Zone Solutions

Schools are among the most challenging environments for road safety management. The combination of high pedestrian traffic, peak-time vehicle congestion, and parents' willingness to park illegally creates a dangerous mix. This guide covers the equipment solutions that make school frontages safer.

The Risk Environment

  • Illegal parking on zig-zag lines reducing visibility
  • Vehicles mounting footways during drop-off/pick-up
  • Children moving unpredictably between parked cars
  • No formal drop-off area, creating conflict between stopping vehicles and through traffic

Equipment Solutions

1. Pedestrian Guardrail

Permanent galvanised steel guardrail installed at the school gate and along the footway adjacent to the drop-off zone. Forces pedestrians to cross only at the designated crossing point. Standard to BS 7818, 1,000mm–1,100mm height. Requires highway authority consent for public footway installation.

2. Bollards for School Footway Protection

Fixed or removable bollards at key points where vehicles are prone to mounting the footway. Flexible rubber bollards are preferred as they cause minimal vehicle damage on accidental contact. Height: 900mm–1,000mm, yellow/black colour recommended.

See our parking bollards range.

3. Formal Drop-Off Zone

  • Marked bays with 5-minute maximum stay
  • One-way flow to reduce conflict
  • Physical barrier between the drop-off zone and the footway/playground
  • Speed bump at the entrance to limit entry speed

4. Speed Reduction on School Approach Roads

  • 20mph zone (TRO required) with advance warning signs
  • Speed cushions on approach roads (to allow buses to pass)
  • Raised table-top crossing at the primary pedestrian crossing point

See our speed bump and traffic calming range.

On-Site Considerations (Private Grounds)

  • Separate vehicle and pedestrian routes within the school site
  • Physical barriers between the car park and playgrounds
  • Speed bumps at car park entry and within the site (private land, no TRO required)
  • Convex mirrors at blind corners within the site
