Parking Bollards: The Essential Guide for UK Car Parks
Parking bollards are used across the UK to define, protect, and control parking spaces. From preventing pavement parking to protecting reserved bays and controlling access to private car parks, the right bollard makes parking management significantly more effective without requiring ongoing management once installed.
Why Use Parking Bollards?
Uncontrolled parking causes problems including pavement obstruction, unauthorised use of private car parks, vehicles blocking fire lanes, damage to landscaping, and reserved bays being used by non-authorised vehicles. Physical bollards address all these issues permanently.
Types of Parking Bollards
Fixed Parking Bollards
Permanently installed posts that prevent vehicle access. Suitable for protecting pavements, landscaping, and areas where vehicle access should never be required. Typically 76mm-102mm diameter steel or cast iron.
Removable Parking Bollards
Allow authorised vehicles to access the protected area when needed. Popular for private driveways, reserved parking bays, and communal car parks with resident access. Consist of a ground socket and a bollard that locks into it with a key.
Telescopic Parking Bollards
Retract below ground level leaving a flush surface when access is permitted. Higher installation cost but preferred where aesthetics matter, such as hotel entrances and city centre retail.
Foldable and Hinged Bollards
These bollards fold flat to the ground when access is needed, without requiring removal. A padlock holds them upright. Cost-effective alternative to removable bollards.
Flexible Impact-Recovery Bollards
Made from polyurethane, these bollards flex on impact and return to vertical. Ideal for guiding drivers and preventing low-speed scrapes against walls and pillars in car parks.
Spacing Guidance
For effective parking control: maximum 1,200mm gap between bollard centres for anti-ram perimeter; minimum 900mm clear gap for pedestrian access; minimum 1,200mm for wheelchair users as required by the Equality Act 2010.
