Bollard Colours and Visibility: Choosing the Right Finish

The colour of a bollard is more than an aesthetic choice. In safety-critical environments, bollard colour determines whether pedestrians and drivers notice and respond to the bollard in time to react. The right colour choice reduces the risk of collisions and injury.

Yellow and Hi-Vis Bollards

Yellow is the most visible colour for bollards in most conditions. Yellow bollards are standard in industrial and warehouse settings where forklifts operate, car parks where driver visibility is important, road and traffic management contexts where highway-use bollards typically feature yellow retroreflective bands, and at pedestrian crossing protection points. Many bollards combine a base colour with a yellow top cap or yellow retroreflective bands, balancing visibility with aesthetics.

Black Bollards

Black is among the most popular bollard colours for commercial, retail, and urban settings, providing a premium, understated appearance and compatibility with a wide range of architectural styles. The main drawback is reduced visibility at night, usually addressed by adding retroreflective banding or white/yellow contrast bands.

Retroreflective Bands

Retroreflective bands use glass bead technology to reflect vehicle headlights back towards the driver, dramatically increasing bollard visibility at night. Most highway-use bollards in the UK feature retroreflective yellow or white bands. Even for off-highway bollards, adding retroreflective banding is a low-cost way to significantly improve night-time visibility.

Heritage and Traditional Colours

  • Dark green (RAL 6005): Traditional colour for park and garden settings
  • Heritage red: Associated with historic street furniture in some cities
  • Charcoal grey: Contemporary urban colour
  • Raw galvanised: Functional finish for industrial settings
